Accessing OWA with Outlook

On my Macintosh I can set Entourage to connect to our Exchange server using
OWA's http interface (and on a different port if I wish too) instead of the
more expected Exchange interface. This is good because it keeps our network
people happy -- they're happy with OWA on port 81 rather than opening IMAP or
Exchange ports.

How can I set Outlook to do the same thing? Do I set it for an Exchange
server and somehow configure it to use http; or do I set it for a web mail
service?

If Outlook can't link to Exchange via http on a selected port; why not when
the Macintosh client has been able to do it for years??

Internally? Just use the Exchange account config and don't worry about HTTP
at all.

External depends on your version of Outlook, version of Exchange and what
outgoing solutions you have configured on Exchange.

Ummm. Our network people only allow the Exchange interface to admin staff who
are located on fixed machines. Everyone else has to use OWA -- which is a
pain in the ......

So, we are all "external". I normally use Outlook 2003 or the new beta of
2007. How can I set the latter to be as useful as Entourage or should I just
stick with a Macintosh and ignore Windows in this case? All I can say is that
Entourage works fine -- so can I set the new Outlook to use whatever it uses?

"Exchange interface"
That are system administrator tools which should indeed only be for mail
admins.

With internal I mean are you on the same domain as the Exchange server? In
that case you can setup Outlook with a native Exchange account instead of
being bothered about an HTTP account.

Hmmm. I replied to this yesterday -- but my message seems to have been "lost"
by Microsoft. Oh well.

In short, our network security people only seem to allow themselves native
Exchange access. Us underlings have OWA or nothing.

That's OK if I use the old Microsoft client "Entourage" under MacOS. It lets
me configure an OWA Exchange server and it all works. What I wanted to do was
the same thing with the new Outlook 2007 client under Windows Vista.

The question is still there -- how do I set up Outlook 2007 to use the OWA
interface to Exchange? Do I use the "http server" or the "exchange server"
settings? Can I set it for a "non-normal" port (in this case 81) like I can
Entourage, and if so -- how?

Thanks for any sensible comments.

Hmm, dirty :-S

Yes, there is a way to do this when you choose HTTP. You'll have to set it
up with the URL of the OWA server including the port and mailbox name. So
the URL would look something like this;

http://exchangeserver.internaldomainname.com/mailboxname:81

It's not really an ideal configuration and support is limited. Since you are
going to use Outlook with OWA anyway they are much better of providing you
an actual Exchange connection. Supporting this is much more of a pain than a
decent Exchange account connection.
