Accessing old Microsoft Backup files on XP Pro machine

I've got old backup files from Win 98 using Microsofts built in software that
are not recognized by Win XP Pro. Any ideas on how to access these file?

see if you can get use of a win98 machine.
as you see, XP's backup and win98's backup programs are not compatable

unfortunately even going back to dos...
it seems with every new OS version...there was a different form of backup
