I cannot seem to get a straight answer on this, but these
forums have always helped............hoping it happens
again.
I have a Windows XP-Home based computer at my residence, ,
a Dell, with a high speed internet connection.
My computer at the office is a Windows 2000 based machine.
We have a small network at our office. We do not have a
server, but function as a work group with a shared high-
speed internet connection.
Q: Is there a way for me to have access to my office
computer files from my home computer. I understand that I
do need to leave the office machine on, but from there,
what do I do next?
........Thank You in advance.

That depends if your office is running a firewall that
blocks file sharing towards the internet.
You could setup a VPN, virtual private network to achieve
this....

One way is to use UltraVNC with its ENCRYPTION plug-in. Get the server, client and encryption
plug-in from...

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/
http://home.comcast.net/~msrc4plugin/

If the office PC is behind a firewall then you need to open TCP Port 5900 and call the office, from
home, using the public IP of the firewall as assigned by the office ISP.

If there's a network administrator at the office, I recommend clearing
all plans with that person before doing anything. Some companies have
very strict policies about remote access to their networks.

You can install the free VNC program on both computers, running it a
server on the office computer and as a viewer on the home computer.
That will let you control the office computer from home. VNC is
available from http://www.realvnc.com

You'll probably have to open a port in the office firewall and use a
dynamic DNS service to give the office computer a DNS name that you
can access over the Internet.

For more information, I recommend reading and posting in this news

You can install terminal services on your office pc runnung Win 2K and install the terminal services client on your home computer. You can access the office computer via the Terminal Services Client/Client Connection Manager from your home computer or you can buy and install pcAnywhere to logon to your computer. Hope this helps.

Actually, there's no remote desktop/terminal services hosting capability in
Win2k Pro. Win2k/2003 Server have terminal services/remoe desktop - and XP
Pro has Remote Desktop - but there's nothing native for W2k Pro.

Why don't you try the FREE http://www.logmein.com, I use it to connect
from work to home, and home to work, and it works great.

It's free and has 256 bit encryption.
