Accessing files restored from a previous build

I recently needed to replace the hard drive on this
computer. fortunately, I had used a backup program to
back up all of the files I had in the MyDocuments folder
and a couple other folders on the original drive. Today,
I was able to restore these files to their original
locations. All of the files restored as 'read-only'. I
was able to change the files and folders' attributes
outside of the My Documents folder easily using explorer,
however, none of the files in My Documents will allow me
to change attributes or even view the files, let alone
edit them. How can I get these several Gigabytes worth
of files back without copying them all over chunk by
chunk from the other computer they are stored on?
