I want to transfer a file from my desktop (W2000Pro) to
my laptop (XP Pro). Don't have network setup, but I just
connected both with RJ45. I initiated network
connections and provided the desktop's name and had to
enter user/pswd for the desktop. msg rec'd saying host
not responding. Now, when I try to connect again, in the
username area, it has the registered owner's name. When
i try this on the desktop, it asked me for
Administrator's pswd-- which I don't know. What am I
doing wrong?? Thanks in advance.

Did you use an RJ-45 crossover cable, or a normal network cable? You must
use a crossover cable to directly connect two computers if you don't have a
hub, switch or router between them.

I was using a normal network cable.

I just set up a home network between 2 desktops using a
normal cable via linksys router, but can't connect the
laptop to the network because my ROM drive is down and i
think the drive is needed for driver installation. Any
suggestions? Thanks in advance :)

Well . . . now i'm not sure what type of cable i'm
actually using. On the cable, it's listed as "... CAT.5E
PATCH CABLE". Thanks again,

Okay, that's a normal cable. It should be fine if you are running a cable
from one computer to the Linksys, then another cable from the Linksys to the
second computer.

Do you know for sure if drivers for the network card are loaded? If you
look at Device Manager (right-click My Computer, select Properties, then the
Hardware tab, finally the Device Manager button) does the card show up
there?
