We are running a couple of Windows 2000 Servers is our
office for data storage. Recently we have started buying
new pc's with Windows XP Professional. (We have been
using Windows 2000 pc's until now.)

When using the XP machines, we are experiencing some
lengthy delays when trying to access data from the
server. If you use "Windows Explorer" to find a file,
you will typically have to wait 30+ seconds for the tree
to expand (Windows Explorer displays 'Not Responding' in
the interim) and then 30+ seconds for the file to open.
This is not a problem on the Windows 2000 machines nor if
the file is saved locally on the XP machine.

Any ideas on how to sort this out?

XP automatically adds shares that use type etc into the
network places folder. If you allow them to do that - I
got the same. Create shortcuts instead to the
\\server\name.

I work on multiple networks and the network places seemed
to try and connect to each network place and get its
information. Not good when its not connected. This
caused network places to come up as not responding. This
is the only solution I can think of
