accessing files form crashed bootdisc

my bootdisc with windows and worst my personal documents, email etc crashed.
to be able to transfer files i mounted it as an extra HDD via USB to my 2nd
PC.
I couldnt look under the my documents/user name files due to protection
built in Windows. So i thought i'd work around it by creating a user account
om the 2nd pc with the same login name and pass as my 1st pc. But no show.
then i tried file transfer. But of course, this only works with special
migration files like the csv export file needed to import your old address
book for instance.
So no solution there. The only thing i can do is get passed my documents/my
user name and see all files, but i cant drag them elsewhere (cannot read msg)
or when i drag the files i want to restore into the share users map on the
former C drive (1st pc, now usb drive) it prompts to activate live messenger
for identification, rofl. Desparate i did log into live messenger from the
2nd pc but no cure, of course it expects to log in from the 1st pc wich is
reduced to an external usb drive now, lol! can someone tell me how i can
acces my data under the my documents/user name folder for crying out loud?!
Without getting those "acces denied" messages?
Thank you, i hope you got a clue!

You can take ownership of the files:

Another way to get the data is to boot with a Knoppix CD and copy the
files to an external hard drive or burn to CD/DVD. Knoppix is a Linux
distro that runs from CD so it doesn't honor XP's permissions.

After you have regained access to your files and folders, using Malke's
suggestion, stop rofl and start a review of your backup philosophy.
Keeping your important files on just one storage medium is sheer
madness. A 2.5" disk in an external USB case is an excellent low-cost
backup medium - what's keeping you?
