accessing controlled user files from WinXP Pro

Hi,
Laptop = WinXP Home
Desktop = WinXP Pro

Using D-link router

I was following the instruction how to set up protected file sharing from
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/index.htm
The major setback is that I don't know how to access the files in WinXP Pro
from WinXP Home laptop. I don't know where to start? Do I need to set up
workgroup setting for both computer? What process do I use in WinXP home in
order to access the file from WinXP Pro with restrict user access? If you
know which other website have more step to step procedure how to do these
stuff will be helpful as well.

I am able to access the shared documents from laptop without any hassles.
Many thanks

Qelami,

If you have file sharing working in one direction, you are more than half way
there. If I am reading you correctly, you can access the contents of Laptop (XP
Home) from Desktop (XP Pro), and you want to access Desktop from Laptop. In
this case, all you need to do is:
# Enable Simple File Sharing on Desktop.

# Enable the Guest account on Desktop.

I would like to disable Simple File Sharing because I want to limit it to
myself to access the files in Pro as the network is shared with my roommates
in my house. I am trying to figure out how I can access to the files secure
as I followed the instructions in the website below. The Pro settings are
done but now I have no idea how I am able to access to them from laptop.

Thank you Chuck

Here are some ways to access the WinXP Pro files from the WinXP Home
laptop:

1. Open My Network Places. It should show the shared disks and
folders that you've created.

2. Type the name of the WinXP Pro computer in the Start | Run box in
this format, the click OK:

\\computer

3. Click Start | Search | Computers or People, click "A computer on
the network", type the computer name in the box, and click Search.
When the computer appears, click it.

Qelami,

OK, if you want to disable SFS, you should also disable the Guest account on the
XP Pro computer. Then setup and logon with a common, non-Guest account, with
identical, non-blank passwords, on both computers.

You CAN protect the XP Pro computer, so only you can access it. With the XP
Home computer, if you set it up so you can access it, everybody else will have
equal access. That's a limitation with Guest authentication.

The window pops up and stated, "\\..........\SharedDocs is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if youhave access permisssions. The
network path was not found." Is there anything I can test to ensure both
computer is able to comunicate to each other? When I click the folder in My
Network Place. As right now I am able to access laptop's file but can't
access to desktop's file.

To see if the computers can communicate with each other, do what I
suggested in steps 2 and 3 above.

Make sure that the folder that you're trying to access is still
shared, and that you're accessing it using the right share name. On
the desktop computer:

1. Type this command in the Start | Run box:

fsmgmt.msc

2. Click OK.

3. Double click Shares in the right side of the window.

4. Find the shared folder in the list and look at its "Shared Folder"
name.
