(I have a network ste up at my house, and it was working fine untill all of
the sudden, I couldn't access my desktop from my other computers. I need to
be able to access the desktop because thats what the printer is hooked up to.
I have three computers on the network. A desktop running XP home sp2, a
laptop running 98 SE, and a laptop running XP media center edition version
2003 sp2. I can access files between the two laptops fine, and i can access
files on the laptops from the desktop but i cannot access files on the
desktop from either of the laptops.
on the laptop running 98, when I try to access the desktop, it asks for a
password. I never specified a password, because i am on an encrypted network.
When I try to access the desktp from the laptop running media center edition,
I get the following message:
Myworkgroup:
\\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions.
Logon failure: the user has not granted the requested logon type at this
computer.
what can i do so i can access that computer again. like i said, everything
was working fine untill suddenly i couldn't access the desktop.

I tried installing the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools, but now I get
the message:
Myworkgroup:

If you ran the SRK Tools, and now you have the new symptom, then you'll have to
find the problem. First, read about layered problem solving.

Make sure that you don't have any misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall,
or other security component.

After you are certain that no lower level problems exist, look at your file
sharing setup, on all 3 computers as a whole. The Windows 98 computer will be a
challenge, but we will help you the best we can.

i looked at all of thoes and tried doing what i could figure out but nothing
worked...is there a way (other than redoing the os) that i could just start
from scratch?
You have 3 computers, so you need to start by figuring out which computer has a
problem. Then you have to figure out what the problem is. Some folks here will
barrage you with suggestions. I'm going to advise you to diagnose the problem.
Look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer running XP, and look at "ipconfig /all"
from the Windows 98 computer. Make sure that you don't have a new problem.

(download browstat!):

Then look at the computers running Windows XP. Is the Guest account enabled for
network access? Have you activated a share on each one?

Can you access any shared data, on either computer running Windows XP, from the
Windows 98 computer?

I tried following all of thoes best I could, but was fairly confused. Do you
want me to give you the results from the command promts? also, I couldn't ger
browstats to work (I installed it)

You can copy it to any folder. It's more predictable if you copy it to
"C:\Utility", then you only type "c:\utility\browstat" to run it, or add
";C:\Utility" to the Path.

ok i got the browstat to work. this is what it came up with. (my desktop
name is NUMMERDESKTOP, my MC laptop is CJSLAPTOP and the 98 laptop is LAPTOP)
the desktop is connecten through ethernet and the laptops through wireless.

But we do need to explore the browser issue. Which computer is on, and online
with the others, the most?
the desktop (running xp home) the laptop funing MC is pretty much always on
but it has a wireless internet connection and the other laptop is falling
appart so it's not used much
i went through all the steps you gave me to no avail. i'm starting to think
it is a lost couse and i will have to re-do the os.

when i type in

I get this:
this user name could not be found.
