Access97 database - Status reporting app - slow response time

I have an Access97 application that is being used by about 70 people. I have
the front end on their workstations and the back end on the network. The
response time when onsite if fine...but when offsite and logging into the
system through VPN the response time is very slow. This is using DSL or
Cable. People are waiting up to a minute or 2 for a form to display. Any
ideas to improve the response time?

70 users is a lot for Access, but it appears your problem is the
connection. Access is very LAN demanding, less so when split as you have
done, but still demanding. I doubt if you can do better with a VPN and you
may experience corruptions, so be sure to back up often.

Would it be possible to use replication?

You could get that down to less than a second by using
Microsoft Terminal Services or equivalent.

Most businesses that support VPN also support Remote
Desktop in one form or another. Ask your network
people.
