how do you set up a report in access so that when it prints you have grid
lines

Put the gridlines onto the report using the Lines tool in the toolbox.

I have put horizonal and vertical lines on a report before and I just had to
click a button does anyone know where that button is located?

You are mistaken. There is no such button.

Unless...do you mean a grid that you see when in design view? That is
View - Grid from the main menu while in design view of the report.
