I get a message saying "unrecognised database format" when
i open a table which has been created and been e-mailed to
me. how can i open the table

There's a good chance that the version in which it was created is "newer"
than the version you are using. Ask the sender to specify which version,
and/or to save his/her work to an earlier version of Access (only available
in more recent versions of Access).

this sounds like a problem with outlook not allowing mdb
files to be sent via email.

I'm not sure I understand. If the emailer didn't even allow attachments,
what was the original poster describing when s/he said s/he got an
"unrecognized db format" error message?
