File Format Unrecognised

When I try to open a Data Base, I receive the message

"Unrecognised File Format"
Can any one tell me what the problem could be?

Thanks for any help
 
That would normally be a version incompatibility, for example you are trying
to open an Access 2007-format file using an earlier version.
