format like excel or txt) , but when I try to open this old mdb file, I got

How to open this file ?

Access 2.0 can read it, and save it in a form that can be upgraded.

If the data is not confidential (or if you'll agree to a NDA), I'd be willing
to take the database, extract the data (data only, no forms or code) and
return it to you, free of charge. You could contact me at jvinson <at> wysard
of info <dot> com if you're interested.

Thanks all for the help.

This database is not confidential, but is about 10GB , 100 files with 100MB
each file.

The programmer put each table in a separeted file.

I will try look for Access on E-bay or similar, if I failed , I will mail
you.

thanks again

Sounds reasonable. If you can put it up on a website or the like where I can
download it via FTP that might be a solution; and of course you can use PKZip
(or WinZip, or Windows Compressed Folders, etc.) to compress the files.

Whoever programmed this is... well, not a real whiz at Access, let's say.

Well, hold on a sec here. If the total data storage is indeed 10 Gb,
with an Access MDB in A97 and prior limited to 1 Gb then the person
decision to break these up into 100 Mb chunks is exactly what I
would've done.

<boing!>

Quite correct. I guess I was thinking three orders of magnitude too small.

Indeed I do see such a copy on Ebay. Allegedly "This product is a
NEVER INSTALLED - LICENSED opened retail box (not Academic or Upgrade)
and includes all of the following: "

Note that Microsoft Windows 3.1 software on floppy diskettes nicely
installed if the floppy diskettes were copied to folders labeled
DISK1, DISK2, etc. I'd strongly urge to you do this upon receiving
the software and installing from the hard drive rather than directly
from the floppy. Not only is this faster you'll know right away if
you have a bad floppy.

After all this time, 15 years, one or two of the floppy diskettes may
not copy properly. You'll get a CRC error. Anyhow if one or two
of the floppies aren't readable come on back and ask.

You may have trouble running it on a system with more than 1 Gb of
RAM. I know that A97 has troubles. If you get a bizarre error
message such as out of memory that might be the cause.

Finally before using it try downloading any fixes from Microsoft. If
there are such still available. Ah, yes, at least one.

Hrm. I just tried this with an old 2.0 database (don't have any 1.1), but I
think the format is the same. Try opening a database (new or existing) in 2000
or 2002/3 format, and using File... Get External Data... Import. Link to one
of the 1.1 databases and see if it lets you import the table. May not need 2.0
at all!

And, please post back here to let us know. As far as I know, the only later
Access version that can read v 1 is v 2, and Access 2003 and later can't
read an Access v. 2.

I've translated v. 1 files with v. 2, to get a copy readable by subsequent
versions but the only machine on which I currently have Access 2.0 installed
won't get past the first display of the Windows 98 screen before hanging.

I know that was true for code-bearing objects but I don't remember about just
data tables. You're probably right, and if the OP gets back to me with a
database I'll post to this thread.

I got it...

"Default Error Opening 1.x Access mdb file in newer versions
I have found a way to open older version of Access in the new version when
you get an error "This operation is not supported for Microsoft Access 1.X
databases."
Create a blank database and then use the import feature in the Tables to
import the old mdb object.
You may need to do little reformatting but you will see most of the data."
