access to "documents and Settings" from previous XP installation

I've had a problem with my original windows
installation... Eventually had to install a new copy of
XP. Now I want to retrieve my files under the
directory 'documents and Settings' which includes a
folder with subfolders of "my documents", "my photos" etc.

However, I cannot accezs this file it says 'access
denied'. Is there any way I can recover this folder to
use in my 2nd Windows installation?

Help will be appreciated.
