Access runs slow in design, shuts down

I have a database of some 7,000 records only that has recently begun to run
very slowly in design view, i.e., it responds w/ a two second delay to the
least keystroke or other edit. This may be related to the second problem, wch
is that sometimes the program shuts down when switching from design to form
view/report preview, even though the underlying queries work fine.

I've compacted and repaired many times, and all I've been able to do so far
is to keep saving...a lot.

If you do any designing and the system crashes, it sometimes leaves
extraneous garbage. Try creating a new empty database and importing your
objects into it.
