Access Permission Issue

I came to the newsgroup to see if I could solve a problem I have encountered. But I see as I review other threads that many people have the same problem with little to no suggestion, so I am once again posting to see if someone has suggestions to resolving this issue.

I have listed the error message below as well as the steps I have already taken to troubleshoot this problem

ERROR MESSAGE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KPW (Workgroup name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Explanation
The LAN has 12 workstations a combination of PCs & Laptops and I am only having trouble with two of them receiving the error message above. All the PCs have XP Professional installed and they all have user name/ passwords. I read in one of the responses back in December 2003 that the problem could be related to the Firewall protection being activated so I checked and yes it was activated. I have since disabled the firewall protection on both problematic machines, but I am still receiving the same error message

I wanted to make sure it wasn't the LAN connection so I connected a Laptop (which was an existing member of the workgroup) and I gained access to the server right away so I KNOW it isn't the wiring, it has to be a PC issue. Also all the workstations were setup with administrator rights so we wouldn't run into any problems and the users aren't power users so we knew they weren't going to mess with settings, etc. All other users on the network have been able to access just fine. I am just at a loss to where the denial of "access permission" is coming from

I would rather respond via this thread so that others with this problem can receive some support as well

Andrew- Thank you for the tip, I will try this on Wednesday when I am there and let you know. I did search to see if there were any other suggestions and nothing other than what you sent me and the Firewall solution

Hopefully this will work. I will keep you posted

Hi Stephanie,

I've finally got my computers networked!! I followed the
instructions on the link I posted, that didn't work, but
then what I found the problem to be was that both
computers were running XP and they both had their
individual Firewalls turned on - I have a router that
connects to the internet and it has its own firewall so I
turned both computers firewalls off and bingo, the
computers could see eachother. I figure basically the two
individual firewalls were seeing request from the other
computer (in the network) as potential attacks
from "cyberspace" and blocked the connections.. what a
releif... hope it works for you too, and anyone else
reading... I noticed a LOT of people posting with exactly
the same problem... very frustrating.. good luck everyone!

Andrew

I got my computers networked this evening as well. Actually with everything I have done over the past couple of days to find a solution I think it was a combination of a few things that actually did it

I also learned that the end users had recently downloaded Norton Internet Security which seemed to be a last culprit I had to overcome to get things to work normally. Once this was disabled I got everything to work

Thanks for all your support. Wish I had more comprehensive assessment to give for people with future problems

Are the usernames the same on the local and network computer? If so, th
passwords must be identical. I had this problem, contacted Microsoft
they suggested this and it now works (n.b. having same password mean
if one has password the other must have that same password - having n
password is not sufficient.

Sjoram,

Thanks, I've been checking online and offline help files without any
success. I had two XP machines I wanted to network and was getting the error
described, after changing all the names and passwords to be the same on both
machines, it works!. Anyone out there in Microsoft land know why such a
simple error and solution isn't the first thing in the help files?

Thanks angain
Joe
