Good afternoon all,

I need to access a password protected win98 share from winxp box with a
password that's different from my winxp login. Can someone let me know
how to set this up?

Windows XP used to ask me for the password for this share when I'd
connect. This had been working fine until I needed set up remote
dektop which forced me to set a login password. Now that I've password
protected my xp login it seems this password is given to the w98 share
by default with no way to overide, which I could find.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to look into this for me.

Best regards,
Michael

Thanks Kurt. I tried that &, if my memory serves me, got an access
denied check that you have permission to access error. I'll check
tommorow when I'm at work & let you know what the message was.

Thanks again,
Michael.

Here is the error I get when I changed the password to something other
than my xp login password.

\\server\share\path is not accessible. You might not have permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server
to find out if you have access permissions.

The specified network password is not correct.

Were you suggesting that I change the password on the share to my xp
login password? I'd rather not do that. My login password is very
weak & needs to stay that way as many people I work with need to access
my PC. If I didn't need remote desktop I'd have no login password like
my co-workers. The share is my whole c:\ drive of my old PC which I
will need read/write access to for the next couple of months. I want a
stong password there.

This is why I've asked for help to access a password protected win98
share from winxp box with a password that's different from my winxp
login.

Best regards,
Michael

Only thing that I can think of is to try and manually set the password
for windows - remember, however, that Windows won't allow the same
machine to login with two different passwords. So if your are accessing
a resource using the normal password you can't connect to another
resource using a different password.

Try looking up the wonders of the 'net use' command.

Thanks, with your help I found a work around this limitation of
windows.

I was trying to change the location of My-Documents on the xp box to
the My-Documents folder within the password protected read/write share.

I had been entering the LAN address directly into My Documents'
properties & the xp box would try to access the share using my login
password.

By mapping the network drive instead, I was given the option of loging
in with a different username/password. I used the read/write password
& changed the location of My Documents' to the subfolder on the network
drive.

Now I (& only I) can edit the files & write new ones to my old W98 box.

Best regards, Michael.
