Access 'Out of Memory'

I have a problem with an MS Office 97 install on my HP Pavilion dv6353cl
running Windows Vista Home Premium. When I first tried to run Access I
received a message that the file c:/windows/system32/system.mdw was missing.
I copied the file from another computer also using Office 97 and pasted it
into the c:/windows/system32/ folder. I then rebooted the computer and tried
again to run Access. This time I received an ‘out of memory’ message,
however I had no other programs running and approximately 1.5 GB of memory
available. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Office 97, however it would
not uninstall after several attempts. How can I fix the ‘out of memory’
problem and/or otherwise get Access to run. I have also experienced this
‘out of memory’ problem with Access 97 using Windows XP Pro.

You need to run service patch 1 to fix the "out of memory" issue when you have 1Gb of memory or more. This also applies to Windows XP as well.

Thank you David. Your post was very helpful to me.
I ran service release 1
(http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/downloads/CD010226191033.aspx) and still
had trouble so I ran service release 2 and ensured that the Jet database
version was 3.51 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172733/EN-US/).
I still got error messages until I remembered to run as Administrator, but
my ancient database is now up and running happily.

The three actions listed above fixed the exact same problem that I had been
fighting for two weeks. I too must run Access as an administrator for it to
work but the other Office 97 programs seem to run just fine without doing
that. Is running as an administrator needed because of the System.mdw is
in the c:\windows\system32 folder?

"Thanks!

Hi Warren,

I am glad you're up and running, but I'm afraid I cannot remember why the
use of Administrator was necessary. My own database is still running well,
but it clearly has a limited lifespan and I am concerned about security so I
am slowly trying to upgrade it.
