access: local only Vista Home Premium

got my new Sony vaio ar3450E in a few weeks ago. Im having trouble
connecting via wireless to the internet. Sometimes it will go on by itself
but other times it will just connect to Local only in which i can see
everything in my network but nothing on the outside. It can remain like this
for hours. Some routers will give me problems and other routers wont but its
of no certain brand. I run D-link in my house and it does not want to
connect to the internet about 80% of the time. My friend runs the same
d-link and i can connect no problem. Thn i try other routers of the same
types and its a hit and miss. Sometimes it will connect and other times it
willl just remain Access: Local only.

i have tried what most people have suggested and disable the ipv6 and set up
a static which sometimes puts me online but then will go out on its own after
a while varyig from 10 min to 5 hours. I have also had trouble with a normal
wired network connection but atleast with wired it allows it to get
onlineabout 80% of the time.

Any Suggestions????

Check if there is a new firmware for the router.

Got the latest firmware for router. also downloaded all updates for the Vaoi
including its wireless switching utility. Still can't figure it out. if i
get connected it will do it on its own and then disconnect anywhere fro a few
minutes to a few hours.. very odd

It connects through a Dlink gamer lounge router. I think i may have solved
the problem but i don't like how i is done.

Upon watching the computer network go on and off on its own i noticed that
when it connects to the "local and internet" it turns off the Network
discovery temporarily. I have turned off the network discovery completely
and its been stable for about 4 hours now. Only problem is that i lose
access to seeing the other computers on the network but i can work with that.

I will continue to time it and see if it remains stable when I am at work
today. I have everything underneath Sharing and discovery to off btw now.

Thank you for the feedback. If disabling network discovery works, re-configure the network security, for example make sure it is in private location. Please keep us update.

Well it worked all day...

turning off Network discovery kept my wireless connection up all day and
even after a few restarts it starts right up... Shouldn't work this way but
it does...

Im running DHCP right now with ipv6 off and under sharing and discovery
everything is off and its working great. Other then those changes there are
no other oddities i have changed right now.

Thanks Again!

When I try to turn off network discovery it tells me to configure it via my
firewall. I have ZoneAlarm. Can someone pls advise me how to do this?

NETWORK DISCOVERY ONLY WORKS IF THE VISTA SYSTEM IS THE LAST ONE BOOTED. The
help sections are pure BS.
