"Access is denied" from workgroup pc

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this very frustrating problem. I've
got a home network with one desktop and two laptops all connected to the
internet through a wireless router. They are all running Windows XP Pro SP2
and are all in the same workgroup. I'm trying to share files but one of the
laptops will not allow me to connect to it from either the desktop or the
other laptop. I'm getting an "access is denied" message when attempting to
connect. However, this "problem" laptop is able to connect to the desktop
and the other laptop to share files (it does require a local username and
password to connect to the desktop though, but I haven't quite figured out
why this is). I am also able to ping all computers from each computer. The
"problem" laptop is not running windows firewall because a group policy has
greyed it out, not allowing me to change the settings. The desktop and the
other laptop both have windows firewall turned on. Could this group policy
be blocking access to the laptop or is it something else?

thanks in advance

Group policy, or any other security setting, or a misconfigured or overlooked
personal firewall, or other security component could well be a problem. There
are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem.

Take a look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from the problem computer, and from 2 other computers
without the problem, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

I'm having exactly the same problem with a new Dell Inspiron 1300 running XP
Home. All other machines (3 desktop + 1 laptop) are running XP Pro SP2. The
Dell can connect to other machines but I get an 'Access Denied' error when
trying to connect to Dell from the others.

Users have been set up on Dell with correct passwords, File & Printer
sharing is switched on and the HD is set for sharing.

Can someone help Please?

Maybe yu're "having exactly the same problem" as you see it, but we'll all be
better off if you start a new thread. Solve one problem in one thread, please.

I'm now getting "Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested
logon type at this computer." I haven't changed any settings yet, why am I
getting a different message? Any help would be great. Thanks.
