Access Denied

I am using Vista Ultimate.

The system has been solid dup until today. Today for no apparent reason it
is reporting Access Denied when attempting to start numerous processes. I
am instructed to check the Event Log. The Event Log service is not active.
If I start it I get Access Denied.

I notice that the Windows directory does NOT have total access granted to
Administrators and SYSTEM. If I attempt to grant it I get Access Denied.

I am running with an Administrator account and UAC is turned off.

I ran a virus scan (again) with Zone Alarm Security Suite.

I am at a loss as to what to try next.

Do a System Restore to when things worked. To run System Restore, go to
the Start Orb and in the Start Search box type "System Restore" without
the quotes. System Restore will appear in the Programs result. Click on
it, allow the UAC prompt, and follow the wizard.

Thank you for the lead.

I was not able to the restore point and am in the process of reinstalling
from scratch.

I am really curious about what caused the original problem. I guess I will
never know.

Thanks for the help.
