Upgraded from XP SP2 to vista home premium, all went well except I keep
getting errors when opening programs and getting to system utilities such as
regedit and opening folders like my documents.
Any suggestions greatly appreciate asap.
Thank you.

Application failed to initialize properly. ClickOK to terminate the
application....trying to open regedit and msconfig and Microsoft outlook
message "cannot start Microsoft outlook, file access is denied, I do not
have permission to access file yadda/yadda.pst
and printers do not work and in doing a preadvisory before upgrade it said
the printer had no issues. It seems like windows is looking for things and
just can't find them. Sorry this is so complicated, but thanks for your
help.

This sounds pretty much like a botched installation to me. During an
"in-place" upgrade (is that what you did?) there are some very significant
delays and black screen periods. Any chance you thought it was finished and
rebooted, or otherwise stopped the complete installation without knowing it?

Anyway, these errors are fairly significant. If it were me, I'd probably
just start over (put the disk in the slot) and this time try to choose a
"clean" install, assuming that option is available.

You didn't say exactly what version of Vista Premium you have. Is it the
full retail version or the retail upgrade-priced version, or an OEM version?

No errors during installation, but...when I first started the Home Premium
Upgrade, my DVD drive would not read the disk, I tried several times to no
avail so I phoned Microsoft and for over 2 hours I had a tech 'try' to help
me, he kept asking his supervisors and finally someone suggested I do a
'flat install' (copy the disk files to a folder on my desktop) and install
the program from there. I guess that shoots down the copyright laws, but he
was a Microsoft tech and instructed me to do it. They 'determined' the DVD
drive didn't have drivers to read the disk. The install went well, just
took forever.

I did have allot of blackouts and on its own it did several restarts, but
nothing was stopped in the process, it took several hours. I didn't want to
do the clean install because I didn't want to loose any programs. I ran the
pre-advisory program with no issues and did alot of house cleaning prior to
upgrade, scandisk defrag ran virus and malware/adware programs etc.

thanks
