Access denied

I have some folders such as my Documents and Settings folder which I am
trying to access (following the instructions on removing and re-installing a
non-Microsoft program). When I try to open the folder I get a message that
says it is 'not accessible' and 'access is denied'. Several other folders
are also not accessible including: My Documents, Recent, Application Data,
etc.

While I can open My Documents, it has three sub-folders within it that are
unavailable: My Music, My Pictures and My videos. I, personally, have added
many pictures to My Pictures but now have no access to them. There have
been no changes (that should limit accessibility) to the system since the
pictures were added. I have no restrictions on any of my folders regarding
access by any user. I am the only user of this computer.

The help options from Vista assume I am either trying to open a file someone
else created, or trying to open a file I created using a different user
account, or that I installed a new version of Windows. As stated above, I
am the only user of this computer. I have never used any different user
account. This version is what came on this computer and it has never been
removed and/or (re)installed.

I am running Vista Home Premium on a HP Pavilion with 2 GB RAM and an AMD
Athlon 60X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.3 GHz. (32 bit OS). My 300 GB HDD
has less than 1/4 in use.

Any help gaining access to these folders will be appreciated.

Those are not folders.
Vista doesn't use the standard folder names that XP used (Documents &
Settings, My Documents, My Pictures, My Videos, etc.). Those are junction
points used to redirect files for older programs that install to or use.

In Vista, use the folders under C:\Users\(youraccount), like Documents,
Pictures, Videos, etc.

If you tried to save photos to "My Pictures", they were actually saved
somewhere else.
Look in C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\VirtualStore to see if they are
in there somewhere.
AppData is normally hidden.

If you open a folder, and see a button named "Compatibility Files" on the
toolbar, it will take you to where the files actually reside.

These folders are XP constructs leftover from your upgrade to Vista. They
point to nowhere or nowhere you want to go. You could not have saved files
to them in Vista for the same reason you can't access them. Vista migrated
all your personal stuff to the locations it uses. Best to check the hide
system files in folder options so you don't hose your system inadvertantly.
XP and Vista are not the same. Remember Dorothy, you're not in XP anymore.

This is happening because you turned on Show Hidden Files and Folders, and
have made the common mistake (as did I) of thinking that those are actual
folders. They aren't, and don't exist as folders. They exist as
something called junction points.

These exist for the use of the OS and for redirecting older apps that want
to see things in "documents and settings\user\etc", which is no longer used
in Vista.

There isn't a physical problem; it's just that you think those are folders
and they aren't. You wouldn't even realize that they existed if you
didn't have Show Hidden Files and Folders turned on.

I am not sure what happened but I thought I had sent the following about 2 hours ago.

Thanks to all three of you; Dave, Cameron, and Patrick; for your fast
replies.

You are telling me not to show hidden files. Per your advice I have marked
"Do not show hidden files and folders". Now the 'folder' C:\Documents and
Settings is no longer visible. And I cannot find any other "Documents and
Settings" on my drive.

The instructions for removing a program (RealPlayer) says to go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\David\Application Data\Real\RealPlayer\db and
delete everything in that directory. But as you can see, I cannot do this
due to the 'folder' not being available.

Using Search I did find a folder
"C:\Users\David\AppData\Roaming\Real\RealPlayer". That is what it said was
found but the folder "C:\Users\David\AppData\Roaming\Real" only had one
other folder in it: RealMediaSDK - Not RealPlayer. RealMediaSDK had two txt
files in it. Should I substitute Real folder this one for the above
instruction?

In addition to this, I know I copied a few hundred pictures into the "My
Pictures" 'folder' and was able to retrieve them for a while. Then all of a
sudden the denied access problem occurred. Now I cannot find any of those
pictures. After this became a problem I loaded some additional pictures
into a folder I created called My Pics and those are available to this day.

Please note that this computer came with Vista installed. I recovered many
of my data files (including pictures) from a damaged drive and transferred
them to this computer. I reinstalled all of the software from scratch. At
no time did I try to copy settings from the old system.

Actually it was the "hide protected system files" that needs to be selected in folder view options. Sounds like that would have saved you some time and confusion.

I'm sorry, I wrote in error that you could not copy files to the system link locations. In fact when copying files to those locations, the files appear in the proper vista locations. For example, dragging a file to the system link ..\users\yourname\documents\my pictures, the file is copied to ..\users\yourname\pictures. Therefore, it makes sense that you had access to those pictures in a different location than where copied. They should still be there. I can't help you find them not knowing all the steps you took in your confusion about the system links and the role they play in Vista. Check the public folder. It has a pictures folder, as does each of your other users' folders.

I'm not familiar with the instructions you've been given to remove files in the uninstall process for Real Player. However, if I had uninstalled Real Player and had no intension of reinstalling, I would delete any Real directory I came upon. I must tell you though that I have some folders created by applications that were deleted from my system two operating systems ago. I'd only call it clutter if I really needed the space. The hardware may change but the data goes on and on and on.

Buena suerte.

Cameron,

Thanks again for the reply & help.

If I hide either the Protected O/S files or just the hidden I get the same result of the 'folder' Documents and Settings not being there. If I don't hide either it is there but not accessible. I will follow your advice and search for all Real folder and files and delete them.

Does the search option work the same here as I remember it in XP? By that I mean can I enter the word Real and it will find all folders and files with real as the name or a part of the name. I would do this choosing the advanced option and checking "Include non-indexed, hidden and system files" and choose C: for the location. I have no other drives attached other than CD and USB ports. None of them would contain any of the files I am seeking.

I tried just what I described above looking for the pictures of my grandson, Ethan. Many of the pictures had the name of Ethan001 or something similar. They should have shown up if they were still on drive C:, correct?

Yes, the search you describe should find it if on drive c:, except I just did a search with those same criteria and a file was NOT found in the recycle bin. You did check there right?

Do you no longer have the pictures folder @ \users\david\pictures, or it's empty? Just curious.

Yes, I checked the recycle bin. My folder \users\david\pictures has two things: 1) a file called cid. cid has no bytes. It was created/modified a week ago and I have no idea what it is or if I somehow created it. 2) a sub folder called Sample Pictures with several pics that came with the system.

Hopefully I still have another source for the missing pics. I will just have to redo some editing that was already done.

Thanks for the help.

The search in Vista is a little different than in XP.
A search for "Ethan" will find files with names starting with "Ethan" or with word breaks (space, hyphen underscore) preceding "Ethan".

Thanks, Dave,

That method found three files I had forgotten about. However, with most of the pictures with Ethan in the name, Ethan was the first part of the name and they should have been found the first method I used. They don't show up with, or without the asterisks.

Thanks for the info.
