access denied

I had to re-install my OS. I cautiously backed up my data, so when XP said it
would probably overwrite My Documents I felt safe it was OK. But when I
started the system, the hard drive where I thought I had saved the My
Documents folder was empty. So I went to c:\Documents & Settings\[my
identity]\My Documents and all the folders were still there. But when I try
to open or browse or even search them, I get an error "access is denied'.

You can imagine my horror. Are these files retrieveable or are they lost
forever? I'm not new to having to start over, I just don't want to,
especially since much of the information for the last two months is there.

Thanks.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I thought I'd lost all of it. Recovered it and reassigned it to myself.
Thanks for your quick help!
