access denied!!

Hi all,

my computer has 3 partitions - C:windows xp
D:windows xp
E:formatted(file storage)

On the D: partition I had a folder called 'work' on my
desktop. At this time my user account name was 'jo' and
had administrator rights.
I am one of many people who use this computer.
When I came back to use the computer I had found that my
user account was no longer there - however the
folder 'jo' in documents and settings folder was there.

I then made a new account 'administrator' and tried
accessing the folder 'work' that was located in
D:\documents and settings\jo\desktop

However I found out that I was unable to access any of
the files inside the folder. I just got error messages.
When trying to open a;

1) word document - 'word cannot open document: user does
not have privelages'

2) a picture - 'access to ...jpeg was denied

3) a pdf - 'there was an error opening this document.
Acces denied'

In the properties of the folder 'work' the read only box
was selected. I unchecked the box hit apply, selected to
apply changes to this folder, subfolder and files when
prompted.
When I did this the following error message appeared;

'An error occured applying attributes to the file:
D:\....doc
Access denied'

No amount of hitting the retry button worked. When
hitting the ignore it simply moved on the next file in
the folder and the same thing happened.

As a last resort I thought of copying the folder onto C:
drive and access the files from there.
However it did not allow me to copy or cut the folder to
another partition.
I am only able to cut the folder 'work' to another
location on the D: drive (copying the folder even to
another location on the d: is not possible)

The errors I got when trying to copy the folder to
another location on D: or cut to another location on C:
or E: is:

'Cannot copy ...doc: Access denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and
that the file is not currently in use'

I am completely stumped. The files in this folder are
extremely important.

any help would be greatly appreciated

many thanks

Dave
