Access Denied when installing Windows XP SP1a

John O'Neill

Hi,
I upgraded my Dell Windows NT system to Windows XP Professional and then
tried to install SP1a.
The files install fine but when the installation program tries to update the
registry I
get the error "Access Denied". I am installing the Service Pack with Admin
rights
andf my Norton Antivirus protection turned off.

In my C:\WINNT direcory there is a service pack log file called
"svcpack.log"
and it had the following line in it, "INF_REGISTRY Failed".

There is another file in the same directory called "setupapi.log" and it has
the following lines in it:
#-007 Deleting registry key
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\System\apphelp
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied.

Some of the lines from the log files are below. Would anyone know why this
happens and how
I can fix the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
