Access Denied to USB Stick via My Computer

O

ocar23

I have just installed Genuine XP Home to a new PC and then installed SP3 +
latest updates.
If I use my USB Stick in any Port, XP recognises it, the Autoplay Screen
appears allowing me to choose what I wish to do and everything works fine
from there on.
If I close the Autoplay Screen or if I close the USB Stick and then go to My
Computer
and Click on E:\Removable Disk to open it, an Error Dialog appears
"E:\Access Denied. Event Viewer shows Error ID 111.
If I use Explorer to open E:\ to open it everything is normal, all Folders
can be seen and used.
If I remove the Disk and Replug it, everything is normal, all Folders can be
seen and used.
It is only when I try to open the Disk from My Computer, E:\Removable Disk.
Other USB Sticks have the same problem on this machine.
The problem cannot be repeated on this Vista machine.
I have run SFC in case files were corrupted.
I have cleaned machine with AVG8 and MalwareBytes.
I have installed XP Home many times and have never experienced this problem.
Has this problem been seen before and does anyone have a fix for it.
Thank You
Owen Carlton

I do not have this problem using the USB Stick on my Vista Computer.

Hi what are the permission set to for this drive? when its plugged in,
right click on the drive, select properties then the security tab.

Flamer,
It does not matter about permissions, as the problem is
intermittent and on re-inserting the memory-key, files CAN be accessed as
normal once again. If permissions were denied to common users on that
drive, it would always be so without exception.

Ocar23,
Having told you what it isn't, I have to tell you that I do NOT
know what it IS! Sorry. I will think some more on this...

Thanks for responses.
This is a tricky one. Further thought is required.
Since I posted, I have reformatted and reinstalled XP Home SP2 to retest the
installation. So with only the barebones operating system, the problem is
still there.
Left Click on E:\Removable Disk in My Computer to Open causes Error Dialog
"E:\Access is Denied". Right Click on E:\Removable Drive, select Explore,
Disk functions normal and opens to show Folders. Unplug Stick and Replug
brings up Autoplay Screen for choice of Actions.
As I said before, this Stick works correctly on opther machines and has done
for years.
Thank you.

The most likely candidate is a driver problem for your USB chipset. A
new computer uses newer components that may not be well supported in a
[older] Windows XP Install disk. Find out what chipset your computer
uses and go to the manufacturer's website and look for an updated
driver. You might also go to your PC Manufacturer's website -- they
sometimes post driver updates as well.

Thank you John,
All Drivers were installed by MSI Live Update and there is no specific USB
Driver as such from MSI. I believe that XP SP1+ contains all the USB Drivers
required for any system.
A couple mor points I have noticed relating to this issue that may be of
interest.
1) When I plugin USB Stick Autoplay Screen appears. One of the items on this
screen is "Open USB using the program provided on the device. I wonder what
program this would be. If I select this action, it provides the same problem
as when clicking on Removable Drive (E:) in My Computer I.E. E:\Access is
Denied. Should there be some particular program on the Stick that would allow
it to open. This has never been required when using Stick on other machines.
2) When I Click the Task Bar Icon "Safely Remove Hardware" a Popup appears
listing "Safely Remove USB Mass Storage Device (E:)" and "Safely Remove
ST3160815AS (C:)" which happens to be my Main System Drive. I have never seen
this before on any machine.
I am wondering if this problem is caused by MSI Driver error.
Thank You
