Access Denied to Limited Users of My Computer

J

Jeff Wright

Hi All

I run xp home and have my own Admin account and three limited users accounts
set up for my young nieces, who mostly like accessing MSN messenger.

We recently seem to be experiencing problems with all the limited user
accounts in that once logged on a window appears with the title 'ERROR' and
a message saying 'Access is Denied'. You try to close the window but it just
reappears. I've just installed a Logitech Messenger WebCam and feel that
problems occuring could well be this or MSN Messenger.

Any ideas.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Something is loading that the limited accounts do not have access to. Look
in the startup folder for allusers here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

There may be a shortcut to a program that requires access to system files
that limited users do not have.

Thanks for the ideas. I've already given that a go but nothing out of the
ordinary in the Startup folders of any user account or the All Users
account. I wonder if there is any other place were files/applications can be
placed for auto run at startup.

Hi Jeff,

Many of them. I would start disabling programs, and in particular recentlyu
installed ones, on the startup tab of msconfig. If you want to see where
something is loading from, start/run msinfo32, expand the software
environment and click on the startup programs folder.

Still trying to solve this problem, unfortunately not yet sorted out.

It appears Logitech Messenger WebCam is the application causing poblems. As
with this uninstalled and everything else installed we have no problems with
the 'Access is denied' message to limited account users when they log-on.
Another thing that I have noticed when I log-off (Admin account) is a
'default beep' just before the log-off melody - this does not occur when
Logitech Messen..... is not installed.

Looking at msinfo32 I see 2 files loaded at startup to all users relating to
Logitech although these files do not appear in the All Users/Start
Menu/Programs/Startup folder. So the big question is can I
1) Stop these files from loading at startup
or 2) Allow them to load at startup without complaining

Go to start > Run > msconfig
startup tab
and disable the files from starting.
Next time you boot, you'll get a window from msconfig informing about
changes made, just check in the lower part of the window stop
receiving this notice every time you boot.

Good luck

Try logging in as you.
In regedit. Hklm/software give full read & write permission to her
account. Reboot.

This should let them have full access to the software but not to the
settings. It may or may not work.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the help. Unfortunately when I tried your suggestion the problem
remained. Never mind I'll keep trying.

The list of startup files is not that long so I list them below in the hope
that we can solve this little anoyance that way!

They are:-
opware32
Dragdiag
ccApp
ccRegVfy
PSDrvCheck
qttask
iTunesHelper
realsched
VTPreset
GhostStartTrayApp
LVCOMSX
LogiTray {This is one that I thought might be problem maker}
ISStart {And this is the other}
NCLAUNCH
Adobe Gamma Loader
PowerReg Scheduler

Once again thanks for your help.

Good News!!

I've been playing again with msconfig and done a process of ellimination
with disabling all the startup files and then enabling one by one and
testing. A total of 4 files had to be disabled to solve the problem. They
were :-
LVCOMSX, LogiTray, ISStart and NCLAUNCH.

My two nieces will be pleased!!

Many thanks to those that helped.

Now back to my codec problem ......
