access denied on root volumn

WindowsXP sp1
A major vendor software install cause a hard crash.
After running check disk limited access users can no
longer accsss the root volumn.
Even new users cannot get access to the root volumn.
Changing limited access users to full access users also
does not allow access to root volumn.
Clicking on root volumn generates an "G:\ Access deneid"
dialog box.
