Access crashes when changing and saving query

Running Access 2002 installed on a WinXP Pro workstation.
Database is on a Win2K Server-based fileserver. One of
our employees finds that when he modifies a select query
and then tries to save the query, Access closes with no
error message. The database consists of tables and
queries imported from a large Access 97 database which has
not been converted to Access 2002 because of the size and
the fact that most of the information in it is no longer
needed. Any ideas about what might be causing this would
be greatly appreciated.
