Access[2007] Copy and pasting table field names

R

Rob W

Greetings,

For the life of me I can't copy and paste table field names from the tables
design view into another MS application such as Excel or Word.

I can only copy n paste within MS access, the information has gone into the
clipboard as the paste option is available but ONLY in MS access.

I've also attempted drag n drop without success and didn't want to write and
execute some SQL just to display field names.

Is it possible to copy the field name from MS access and dump it into
another MS application?
I did a search and found a link to Microsoft issue but it appears to be for
an old version.

Any advice?

Thanks
Rob

Isn't that for Importing data in (well it appears to be)?

I would like to be able to copy n paste the table field names from an access
table into notepad and/or excel.

Thanks
Rob

The only way I know that you can do this (paste ALL the field names at one
time is to open the table in datasheet view, click on the row marker, copy the
ONE row of data, and then paste that into the destination file. Now delete
the data from the paste and you should have just the field names (or field
captions if you have used that).

A second method is to build a query with all the fields, switch to the SQL
view, and copy the SELECT clause to get a comma delimited list - but that will
have the table name and may contain brackets around the names.

I would like to be able to copy n paste the table field names from an access

I'm not sure where it is in 2007 but try the Database Documentor. It will
generate an Access Report displaying the fieldnames, and you should be able to
copy from there.

Thanks all I will let you know how I get on.

I wanted this to save time, I could have typed them out now many times after
all this research ;-)

As I posted earlier
-- Open up the table in datasheet view
-- Click on the record selector for the first row (cannot be a blank row)
-- Copy the record
-- Open up Notepad (or Excel or Word or ...)
-- Paste into the document to get a tab-delimited list
-- Delete the data row

In Word you will get a table view when you paste and will have to get rid of
the table by choosing to paste as text (Paste Special ... choose the
unformatted text option.

In Excel you will get the field names in separate cells of the top row of the
paste.

Unfortunately if you have used the CAPTION property for a field, this will
paste the value of the caption property instead of the name of the field.
