Access 2007 - compact database

Tony WONG

i find the file size of Access 2007 expanding quickly, different from
previous version.

i need to compact it frequently. is it normal?

Secondly, i also find when i compact the database in Access 2007, the file
name and its extension (accdb) will change to database.mdb

thanks a lot.

More info

1. The file only stored forms & queries & reports

2. compact in local drive, the filename will not be renamed. The rename
only happens in network drive.

so strange.

any comments? thx.

1. I experienced the same. ACCDBs bloat more than MDBs. I guess this is due to
the larger amout of properties for all database objects compared to former
versions. Changing any object writes a new stream to the access storage while
leaving the old one in it. This effect only appears when changing design. I
think for normal record operations it will not happen.
2. May be strange, but access creates a new database called database.mdb or
database1.mdb when compacting. Indeed this is a ACCDB. After compacting into
this new database it closes and deletes the original one and renames
database.mdb to youroriginaldatabase.accdb. May be you don't have enough
permissions for files to rename or delete them on your network drive? Check it.
This may cause problems.

Ciao, Sascha
