Access 2003 logon question

about a week ago, I was opening various databases and suddenly began getting
a logon window asking for a password. None of the passwords I would normally
use worked. I uninstalled Office 2003, ran the registry cleaner with Norton
System Works, and reinstalled Office 2003. Still the problem. I'm unable to
use my Access for anything, since this window pops up for any database I try
to open or create. I noticed that when I reinstalled Office, it did not ask
me to activate the product after the installation. Could this be something
with the Windows registry? I am running Windows XP Pro.

You may have changed the default workgroup associated with Access.

Open Access and select Tools | Security | Workgroup Administrator from the
menu bar (before you select a database)

It'll tell you the associated workgroup. Assuming a standard installation,
the default is C:\Windows\System32\System.MDW. If you've got a customized
workgroup file, see whether you can find the default one.

Opening Workgroup Administrator from the menu bar shows the workgroup to be
C:\Documents and Settings\Tom Brady\Application
Data\Microsoft\Access\System.mdw . There is no system.mdw in
C:\Windows\System32 . What's our next step?

Do a search to see whether you do have a System.mdw file anywhere else on
your hard drive.

If not, try renaming (as opposed to deleting) the one that you found and
then reopening Access. I believe it'll create a new one for you.

If that doesn't work, you could try creating a new one using the Create
button under Workgroup Administrator.

We also use Access 2003, try finding it in c:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\System.mdw

Sorry to be so long getting back to you - I was out of town all last week. I
renamed the system.mdw file which Access had identified, and that did the
trick. I can now open databases without being prompted for a logon. Thanks so
much for your help - I would not have thought of that on my own. I really
appreciate it.
