can't log in to any of my databases

I have Access 2003 set up on my home machine (I am the only user). Recently I
opened a database which had security set up on it, and since then I am unable
to open any database. I get the security logon screen with my user name and
looking for a password. I didn't set anything up with a password. I've tried
every password I've used for the past several years to no avail. What's the
best way to fix this?

Sounds like you are now joined by default to the mdw file used for the
secure database. Access uses a mdw file for every session. Usually you
leave your default set to the mdw that ships with the product (system.mdw),
and use a desktop shortcut to open secure databases (the shortcut would
include a /wrkgrp switch to override the default mdw for that session of
Access).

Open Access and go to Tools, Security, Workgroup Administrator and you'll
see the workgroup you have set as your default. Change it by clicking on
Join and rejoining system.mdw (you might want to search for it first, to get
the location).

Hi Joan,
I did as you suggested, and the Workgroup Administrator shows I'm using
system.mdw. Is it possible that I corrupted or modified it? Could I copy a
system.mdw file from another PC and overwrite the existing one?

Since you are using 2003, just go to Start, Search and locate all *.mdw
files (be sure to include hidden and system folders).

Rename each one that you find - I wouldn't delete them, because I assume you
still want to get into the 'secure' database you have.

When you open Access, since it can no longer find the mdw set as it's
default, it'll create a nice, new squeaky clean one for you.
