Access 2002 install blunder

C

Chuck McKinnon

Had Access 2002 upgrade installed by virtue of previously having office 97
installed. Then blundered and discarded 97.
Machine became unstable due to invasions of various kinds. Formatted disk,
stupidly didn't back up Access (not stable anyway), installed XP, etc.
Big shock to realize Access upgrade don't work w/o old 97. Didn't find a
"qualifying" product.
Wandered around the MS Support sight, might have contacted them if they
hadn't asked for the PID, which you don't have if you can't install. Just
for laughs I had written down tht nr. and supplied it, but then they said it
was not supported in US. (Bought at Fry's)
So now I wonder what other products that I might have or buy (next to buying
full-blown Access) that qualify, or possibly an old full-bore Office.
Sure feel stupid; have for years kept old s/w for thaat very reason, but I
hope some one might suggest a solution.

Hi, Chuck.

I feel for you. It's pretty frustrating. Microsoft doesn't support Office
97 any more, so that's why you got that "Not supported" message from their
support Web site.

I don't know where to find a list of eligibility products for upgrading to
Office XP, but Microsoft has a list of products elible for upgrading to
Office 2003 on this Web page:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/access/howtobuy/default.mspx#XSLTsection126121120120

I'm not positive, but I would think that any product that qualifies for an
upgrade for Office 2003 also qualified for an upgrade for Office XP. On the
list you'll see the various versions of Microsoft Works that also qualify
for the upgrade, and Works suites are cheaper than any of these versions of
Microsoft Office.

Many brand new computers come with Microsoft Works pre-installed or on an
accompanying CD, but consumers often purchase Microsoft Office anyway, so
they don't need or want Microsoft Works on their computers. If you know of
anyone who has purchased a computer in the last few years, then you may be
able to talk him into giving you his CD (he has to uninstall Microsoft Works
from his computer to follow the guidelines in the license agreement,
though), and you could use that CD as the "qualifying product" for your
upgrade to Access XP.

If you can't find someone with an unwanted copy of Microsoft Works, then you
can probably find a bargain in an eBay auction (http://www.ebay.com). You
may even be able to find a bargain from a vendor online. Check the various
price comparison Web sites, like http://www.pricegrabber.com or
http://froogle.google.com, for an older version of Microsoft Works. Here's
one for Microsoft Works 6.0:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=309599/search=Microsoft%20Works%206.0

AtomicPark.com sells it for $18 (OEM) or $25 (Retail), including tax, S&H.

Before you spend any money, find out if a particular product definitely
qualifies for this upgrade. If I were you, I would put out another message
in the News Groups, such as: "Does MS Works 6.0 OEM Qualify For Access XP
Upgrade?" If anyone has successfully done this, then he'll let you know.
Good luck.

HTH.

I can tell you from experience, only Access will qualify
as an eligible product. I have the same problem and have
Office installed.

Microsoft offers no help.
