Access Access 2002 Import Wizard

On my pc I have both Access 97 and Access 2002 (Windows 2000). I'm having problems importing data files (.xls, .cvs, .txt) into my Access 2002. When I select Import, and then chose the file, I get an error message saying Access and encountered a problem and needs to close.
I've tried tons of stuff (re-registering .dll files, etc.) and am at a loss...any help would be much appreciated.
