I am going to install XP PRo (academic licence) onto a new
unformatted, un-partitioned (maxtor 40gb)harddrive.

Can anyone tell me if the Windows-XPPro CD-ROM has the
auto-detect for my CD-ROM drive?

Are HDD formatting and partitioning utilities embedded in
the MS-WIN-XP-PRO disc or do I need to go and use Maxtor's
tools?

I want this new drive to fucntion as a master drive and
leave my previously-installed 9Gb drive with all my
software running under Windows98 installed as a slave.

Does anyone know if there will be dual boot-up issue that
I will need to deal with immediately? Will there will be
a problem if I later remove this smaller drive or disable
it?

I can't contact MS's web support because the product key
code on the CD-ROM disc packaging won't fit the id request
space on the MS suport request page.

thanks!

Umm all you have to do is change the bootdisk
in BIOS to the CD to boot from it. It maybe/should
be bootable.

(Also make sure the hdd and CD are on AUTO in the BIOS).

Its the BIOS that detects the hard drive/CD
NOT XP. Since XP isnt installed at the mo
anyway.

Once you have changed the bootdisk to CD
in the BIOS. Save the settings, let it reboot
and down the bottom of the screen when it says
press a key to continue. Press any key and XP will
install. Press any key to continue will appear
a few more times, (after it reboots), BUT DON'T
press a key again.

Let it continue installng XP, till it finishes.

Once XP is installed, you may have to edit
boot.ini so it'll give you the option of booting
98 from the slave hard drive.

All XP CDs are bootable. You have to go into the machine's BIOS setup,
and tell that to boot CD before Hard disk. Boot order may be a page of
its own, or may be in BIOS settings

Use the ones in the CD - when you go into Setup Windows from the boot,
and hence into a new install, you get a point where it asks where to put
the system. At that point tell it what size partition to make (may need
to hit ESC to get more than a 'use all the disk' option)
