My son, Son, set up his preferences for his desktop and other things, I
guess, using the default Administrator identity. My husband, Dad, wants to be
a new user, but when we created his identity, the Administrator identity no
longer showed up when we restarted. I understand that the Administrator icon
no longer shows once another account is set up, except in safe mode. I used
System Restore, and got back to my son's usual desktop, which I was unable to
find earlier.

How do I save all the settings my son set up under the default Administrator
name and move them to a user account with his name, Son. How can arrange that
all users can have Administrator capability?

Can someone help me with this?

i'm quite surprised u could log on as admistrator at normal startup.
However, admistrator suppose to pop up only at safe mode.
If you log on as admistrator, which means boot in safe mode,
set all settings for the admistrator. After that, create an accout
from the admistrator-logged-on time. i would suggest to save
the settings in Windows Theme for desktop settings.

Thank you for your reply. I need some more help.

I used System Restore, and I am now back to my son's original desktop, with
all his icons for shortcuts. How can I save these settings from here, without
having to go to Safe Mode?

Or,should I create two users now, one for Son, one for Dad, and then restart
in Safe Mode in order to find Son's settings? I'm not sure I understand what
you mean by "save the settings in Windows Theme for desktop settings." Will
that save his shortcut icons? How do I copy them to Son's new user account
afterward?

you can copy the desktop folder from the existing user to the new user
identity and that will save you from having to go into safe mede.

create the new identity
c:\documents and settings\existing user name\desktop copy this folder.
go to new user identity under documents and settings and paste the folder.

this way the existing dektop will be copied to the new profile and the
existing profile cna be changed.

Thanks. I started doing this, and I have another question.

Should I move the contents of each folder under Administrator, like
favorites, cookies, etc. to the new Son folder? When I'm all done, should the
Administrator folder have these folders at all? In cae of future problems, I
don't want my son's settings, favorites, application data, etc. to be under
Administrator.

no need to to move all of the folders. the cookies will regenerate
themselves. but you may want to copyover the Favorites and his documents to
his new profile. otherwise he may not have acces to them. I believe that the
application data will also regenerate itself.

For some reason, when I created the new User Identity, I got a Son2 folder,
which kind of confuses me. I think I'm OK though with your solution. Thanks.

As you've discovered, once any additional user accounts have been
created, the Administrator account will no longer be displayed on the
Welcome Screen. This is a default security feature. By design, the
only way to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home is to
reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at
the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.

The built-in Administrator account really isn't intended to be
used for day-to-day normal use. The standard security practice is to
rename the account, set a strong password on it, and use it only to
create another account for regular use, reserving the Administrator
account as a "back door" in case something corrupts your regular account(s).

A wiser course of action would be to create another user account
for your daily use, as you say you've done, and copy desired the files
and settings from the Administrator account to this newly created user
profile.
