Abnormal shutdown after SP2 install

After updating my XP home system with Service Pack 2 my
shutdown has slowed/changed. Now the shutdown begins
with the monitor turning off first, then the hard drive
shutting down , and then the abnormal part - - the power
supply and case fans remain on for about 14 seconds then
finally turn off. Other than this anomally, everything
else seems to work fine. I checked device manager and
everything is fine - no error signs. Prior to installing
SP2, the monitor, hard drive and case power supply would
shut down at about the same time.

My shutdown has changed too, but not in the same way. The shutdown seems to
be normal, except that it ends with a blank black display while the system
continues to run. The monitor's POWER LED suggests that the system also
continues to supply signal to the monitor. When this situation seemed likely
to persist for ever I switched off with the ON/OFF button.

All ideas welcomed
TIA

My shutdown hangs exactly like "Little Neddie" and the hard switch-off
seems to cause no problems on bootup. I've sent in a support email to
MS and am awaiting their reply. That is the ONLY problem i'm having on
this little 3 computer, wireless home network---all with SP2.:)
I'll post their reply when received....Jim
