A7V8X shutdown problem

Help!

I've got a Rev1 board, running BIOS 1006, Athlon 2100+, W2K Pro SP4, which
refuses to shut down completely - everything happens fine except for the
final power off / lights off - unless I disable the secondary IDE devices
(currently a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM). Obviously (he said) it isn't supposed to
work like this.

Any suggestions as to what could be the cure to this?

I've found that certain Nvidia drivers prevent shutdown.
