A7V400-MX motherboard

New install- without any devices attached to this board, except built in
vidio & sound. as soon as power is turned on it starts to boot then stops
and starts again, then it post ok. I have flashed the bios, cleared cmos,
changed memory and power supply, it still does this, When I turn it off , I
hold the power switch in till it stops running so it should be off, however
it is still in the sleep mode, I even repaced the board, it does the same
thing.. It does this with only the power button attached, I checked to make
sure it is attached to the board to the correct pins, I am stumped. any
helpwill be greatly appreciated. I have a hard time believing I have two
boards defective, I think something else is wrong.

That is normal for this board, as well as several other Asus boards.

I have two A7V400-MX boards, and they also do this.

They only do this from a "cold" start. If you do a normal shutdown (the
boards go into standby mode) and then start the PC, it will start
normally without stuttering.

If you do a shutdown and unplug the power cord from the power supply,
reconnect the power cord, and turn on the PC, it will do the stuttering
startup thing.

If you are one of them that before going to sleep switch off
completely power on all standby devices, - then you have a problem
with every ATX power supply. They all behave as you describe.

The standby power for a soft-shutdown atx power supply is just a few
watt.
But the ATX power supply offer some advantages:

- suspend to ram
- power-on by touching any key or mouse
- etc. other wake-up functions
