A7N8X-X compatible with Athlon 800

Erwin

Hi,
I'm thinking of updating my A7V MB with a A7N8X-X motherboard, because of
the problems with USB and VIA chipset. I'd like to "recycle" my CPU but I'm
a bit confused now about the compatibility of my old Athon 800 (Socket A)
CPU and this new motherboard. At the Asus site at the specs of the MB it
says it's compatible with "Socket A for AMD® AthlonTXP/ AthlonT/ DuronT
600MHz ~ 3000+Socket A for AMD® AthlonTXP/ AthlonT/ DuronT 600MHz ~ 3000+",
so my CPU should be a problem but if I double check here:
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx my CPU is not
compatible...
So what will it be?
Btw my current memory will work on the A7N8X-X?
Cheers,
Erwin

some FAQs .......

Q: There is a description on A7N8X-X user's manual saying "Do not use
processors with core speeds of less than 1GHz on this motherboard." Why?

A: According to lab test, processors with core speeds of less than 1GHz
will result in unstable system. For better system stability, please use
CPUs with core speeds over 1GHz.

Q: Does ASUS A7N8X-X support dual channel memory technology?

A: No. Within NVIDIA chipset specification, A7N8X-X supports single
channel memory mode. If you want to have dual channel memory support,
please purchase A7N8X, A7N8XDeluxe, or A7N8X-VM.

Q: As I know many nForce2 motherboards support dual channel DDR, I want
to confirm whether A7N8X-X supports dual channel DDR or not. Please
advice!

A: According to NVIDIA specification announcement, A7N8X-X doesn't
support dual channel DDR technology. If you wish to have this new
feature, please use A7N8X/Deluxe or A7N8X-VM.

.....

If USB is the only reason to buy a new board you may just want to get a
USB2 PCI card (if you have a PCI available).

Probably time for a new computer, read up on fsb(front side bus)
and sdram versus ddr memory.
You are trying to put a VW bug engine in a Porsche!

For the sake of £27 get yourself a Duron 1.3

It is the lowest spec CPU around, but at least it will work with the
mobo.

That tells enough...

You're probably right!

Where is that FAQ..
It's confusing as all athlons should run just fine @ 50mhz fsb.. I think the
lowest working multiplier is what? 5..
so an athlon should be stable at 250mhz shouldnt it?..
Plus I dont get why a "core" speed should have any effect on the system as a
whole.. Anyhow.. Just asking where I might find a bit more info on that if U
know..

ECS and others make what we call an "UPGRADER"
motherboard that supports older cpu's and sdram(only 2 slots).
Even has USB2 support. They support later amd xp's and ddr
also.
ECS K7S5A PRO USB 2.0 SiS® 735 SOCKET A MOTHERBOARD - RETAIL Back

$43.00 usa

Hmmm interesting... is only 1/3 the price here in Holland compared to the
A7N8X-X :)
