A7N8X Stopped Booting

Hi All,
my A7N8X has stopped booting (after about 1 year).

No video, no Lan light, optical mouse doesn't light up, no beeps. Disk
drives are spinning, but it doesn't access any disks; floppy; hd etc when
it's turned on. Keyboard doesn't 'light-up'.

Green LED on mothernoard is fine, all fans work (cpu + video + case).

So what should I try and replace first, CPU or motherboard ?

TIA

Make sure your video card and memory are properly seated. Take them
out of the board and re-insert them.

If you still have problems try different memory and only one stick if
you have more than one bank filled.

Disconnect all hard drives and try and use a boot floppy to start the
system.

Try another power supply. Most of my mainboard issues have been
because of memory or the power supply.

I hope you get it working.

I have this same mainboard and in the last two weeks it has been
booting slower and slower. Now, when I turn it on it takes 30 or 40
seconds to recognize the drives connected to the onboard IDE
controller. After that it boots. I have a 520w PS in this computer,
but I do have lots of drives. I removed all but a few internal
components and have been monitoring it with motherboard monitor to
make sure the voltages are ok. The processor is not overheating and
the voltages from the PS under load are all within tight
specifications.

I have come to the conclusion that the mainboard is going bad.
Replacement parts are onthe way.

good luck to you..

If you have powered speakers attached, turn them on, this board can give
diagnostic messages, but under some circumstances you won't hear
anything.

Try a new cmos battery first and remember to reset the bios with no
power to the pc -
(unplug from the wall socket). If it still won't pass the post, hold
down the insert key while powering up - this should restore safe bios
defaults.

After that try disconnecting the power and data cables for all drives
apart from the boot hd, if it boots replace one at a time rebooting each
time.

"optical mouse doesn't light up"

The optical mouse is USB ? I would have thought it would light
if it had power. Does that tell you a power supply rail has failed ?
I would want to trace to the header that powers the mouse.
There are usually headers on the motherboard, that select between
+5V and +5VSB, and maybe this means your main +5V has failed, if
that is how the mouse is powered.

If you have a multimeter, while the system is powered up, grab a
disk drive power cable. Connect the black of the meter, to a lug
on one of the I/O connectors in the I/O area. Then, plug the red
lead of the meter into the +5V and +12V holes on the disk drive
cable. A measurement there will show you whether the rails are
at proper voltage or not. Otherwise, just try another supply.

Hi All,

reseated video + memory - no change.

Off on vacation in a few days, so will try replacing the cpu when I get
back. (I'll buy the cheapest one possible)

Thanks for all the suggestions
