positive speaker is hooked up correctly but have tried flipping it
anyways
basic boot up was tried with 3 sticks ram, vid card,
also booted with just cpu installed and still no beeps for no video
and/or ram missing
all basic troubleshooting done , reseating, rebooting etc etc..
..Video card works fine as it just came out of my other computer,

did some reading and can't find an answer

is there a definitive way to find out if the board is dead ?

Hi,

I don't have an A7N8X, but...

Make sure you are using correct anti static and handling procedures.
IE use anti static mat and / or wrist strap,
no static generating clothing (synthetics),
no static generators around EG synthetic carpet.
don't touch the surface of any cards, chips.
handle cards / components only by edges etc.

Try pulling out *all* your front panel connectors - including speaker and
reset.
I had a duff reset switch the other day.
Try removing the mobo from the case and placing it on a non static
generating, non conductive surface and fire it up there.
Check you have not shorted the motherboard underneath somehow by installing
too many mounts or dropping a screw in behind.
Check the memory is the correct performance, in the correct combinations &
check the manual for requirements.
Remove all but 1 stick of memory (if having only 1 stickis valid),
Check your graphics card has the correct AGP X rating for the board.
Check you have all PSU connectors plugged in. Some mobo's have a 4 pin 12V
DC connector.

Post back with progress and specific details.

HTH

Start with the most basic thing to confirm the board and power is working.
Put it on a bench with nothing on it (no CPU, no memory, no video card).
Cable the main power and hook a speaker to the audio output. Turn it on and
see if it gives the "No CPU" message on the audio output. If it works,
start building up the system one-by-one in the following order: CPU,
memory, keyboard, mouse, graphics card, hard disk, floppy, CD-ROM.

If it doesn't work, reset the CMOS according to manual instructions. If it
still doesn't work, the board (or PS) is bad.

Thanks for all the responses

I did catch one thing I had wrong - the jumper for cpu fsb was set at
default - 266/333/400 and the athlon is 200 which I didn't realize.
Of course, this didn't fix the problem :( I tried the cmos deal too
and no luck

I guess I will have to remove it and strip it right down tonight to
see what happens...

Thanks

okay
the sexy womans voice has told me that
the memory test failed.
pretty cool feature

I then foolishly discovered this board does not take ecc ram
which I thought it did....so looks like I need to get some new ram
as the old sticks from my main comp are ecc buffered sticks...

cheers
