A7N8X rev.2.00 - just a few quick questions

-DraconuS-

Hi

A few questions:
1. I have set 2x256MB PC3200 into slots 2&3. POST says 'Dual channel'. Is
there any other way to check if the dual channel is really working? Is there
some way to temporarily disable dual channel (instead of just moving the
memory sticks into slots 1&2)?
2. Anyone knows what [Auto] option for 'AGP frequency' does? Does it keep
66,6MHz independently of what FSB I set?
3. Anyone knows what [Auto] option for 'CPU Voltage' does? Does it keep the
CPU at default voltage or sets the minimal stable voltage dependent on CPU
speed (multiplier x fsb) I set?

1.,no and if in dual mode then it says so on boot.
2, it does ecaxtly as it says, detects and sets it to right freq.
You can set it to 66 if you want.
3.cpu core voltage is set for max performance without stressing the cpu.
How come you don't read the manual???
it's all in there.

Do you have reason to believe it is not working when it says it is? Trust
me, it'll be working.

I'd hope, but I always just set things like that, if I have the option.

Default voltage.

Hi KB,

Thanx for your answers...
I did have read the manual before - I just need a little more
'professional'/detailed info! I just wonder...:
1. ...if there are really no other ways to check this (ie. some software,
not benchmarks) then OK :)
2. Can you tell then what frequency for AGP it sets (when [Auto]) while
setting FSB/memory to 200(400)?
3. Does it mean when I overclock it automatically raises the cpu voltage?

Greets, Maciej

2. Can you tell then what frequency for AGP it sets (when [Auto]) while
setting FSB/memory to 200(400)?It should stay on default(66) but better to set it yourself
3. Does it mean when I overclock it automatically raises the cpu
voltage?Don't see why it should.

Jesus, I wasn't asking for answers like 'If it works - just leave it :p' of
this kind!
Just say you don't really know or say nothing :) Thx
Don't see why it should.

Just because it won't POST with default Vcore when overclocked.

No need for that!!

A few questions:

I thought Dual Channel was only available when RAM is plugged on slots 1 & 3
(ISO 2 & 3) ????

I think the AMD boards with the nforce chipset address memory different,
they can get dual channel off a DS stick in slot 1, and another off 2/3.

or something like that, look around the threads, someone was asking about
this earlier, plus Ben Pope has a link in his sig for lots of good info.

You need some memory in each bank... slot 3 is bank 1, the other 2 slots are
bank 0.

So for Dual channel you need at least two sticks installed, one of which
must be in slot 3.

Don't even dick around with that. No normal person could tell if dual
was on or not.
2. Anyone knows what [Auto] option for 'AGP frequency' does? Does it keep

Auto on that board like many others is not reliable. When you increase
the FSB the AGP speed might be going sky high. So set it to 66Mhz for
stability. Lock the RAM to 100% for the same result.
3. Anyone knows what [Auto] option for 'CPU Voltage' does? Does it keep the
CPU at default voltage or sets the minimal stable voltage dependent on CPU
speed (multiplier x fsb) I set?

Never had to touch that on either board, both running 2500+ @ 3200+.

So on this board, you could use say 1x1024 in bank 1 and 2x512 in bank 0?

Lucky you! My Tbred-B 2200+ is not so tough. From nominal 1800@133 it is
going only for 1900@200 or 2000@182 and around that... all with max. raising
of Vcore!

Yeah. You noticed how 1Gig modules are overpriced? Shame...

And what about the manual saying that this mobo can support only 2pcs of
DDR400 (PC3200), Ben?
What would be the reason for it while 3xDDR333 modules are easily supported?
IMHO it is only a matter of speed and timings.

So, I've got 2x256MB for now. If I wanted to upgrade to 1GB, can I use:
Bank0: 2x256MB
Bank1: 1x512MB
Will it give 1GB dual channel without any problems??

btw: Here in Poland I cannot find any store that offers 1GB modules in a
moment ;)

Where? Would it be anywhere near page 13 that states:
"Three (3) sockets are available for 400MHz-PC3200, 333MHz-PC2700,
266MHz-PC2100, or 200MHz-PC1600 DDR DIMMs to form a memory size of 64MB to
1GB"

Which is badly worded, since each slot can take 64MB-1GB DIMMs, to form a
total of 64MB to 3GB total memory installed.

You sure you're not talking about the A7N8X-X?

Assuming the timings are correct, and you don't have crap RAM, and you have
an A7N8X rev 2.0, as per the subject of this thread: yes, almost certainly.

Yes. I'm sure I have A7N8X rev.2.00, but it turns out that I have probably
some older edition of the manual or so :)

Thx. Now with the new downloaded manual I would not even ask such question
:)

I just upgraded my 2x256 Crucial Xtreme PC3200 (slots 1 & 3) by adding 1x512
Crucial Xtreme PC3200 for 1 GB. You place the 2x256 in slots 1 & 2, and the
512 in slot 3. Works perfectly and still in Dual Channel mode. This is how
the Asus faq says to do it, and it works...
