A7N8X-E Deluxe Drives problems

Joachim Trensz

Gentlemen,

I use WinME and W2k.

After switching from an A7N8X to an A7N8X-E Deluxe, WinME doesn't see my
DVD burner anymore, whereas it works fine in W2k. It is connected as
secondary master, the slave on that port is a 160 MB Western Digital HD.

Also, on the old A7N8X, in WinME, the Device Manager had always shown
the two IDE ports with a yellow exclamation mark. The controller was
shown as ok, without probs.

Now, on the new A7N8X-E Deluxe, the WinME DevMan shows the ports again
with that yellow exclamation mark (Code 10), although I am using the
cables that came with the mobo and installed everything properly.

In W2k, neither of these problems exists.

If anyone has any hints and tips, I'd be grateful if he'd share them
with me.

Thanks in advance!

Joachim,
I presume your using a dual boot operation. When you installed your -E
board you most likely updated the W2k side of your system. Have you
also installed the latest nVidia chipset drivers for the Win ME side of
your system, since you changed the boards? Reason I ask is IIRC a Code
10 signified the drives were running in Compatibility mode and usually
an updated driver fixed that error. Just a shot!

Hi Rob,

yes, I've updated everything. But things get even weirder.

I've this evening decided to reinstall both OS and started with W2k, and
now the really weird thing starts.

fdisk, the W2k setup and Partition Magic say that the Primary Master is
disc 2 and complain that there is no active partition on what they call
disc one, which in reality is the Primary Slave. The active partition is
on the Primary Master as it should be.

The BIOS detects the Primary Master and Primary Slave correctly, but
fdisk, the W2k setup and PM8 mistake the Primary Slave for the Master -
how can that be?

I've tried two different cables, and also Cable Select and explicit
Master/Slave jumpering. The system always works fine, but fdisk, the W2k
setup and PM8 always think that the Primary Slave (which only contains
an Extended partition with W2k on it, whereas the Primary Master
contains C and D, boot is from C, which is also the active partition) is
disc two, and there primary slave were disc one.

Here's a screenshot from PM8:

Have you double checked the master/slave jumper settings on all your IDE
devices?

Thanks for the help guys, and major shame on me. I'd mistaken the one HD
for the other. Must be some sort of HD blindness caused by fiddling
around with them too much ;)

Thanks again!

May I ask you one question? Why do you need WinME & Win2k OS-es on the
same machine? Why do you need WinME at all?

Can't speak for the other person, but I have a Logitech parallel
scanner that simply does not work in any operating system after ME.

There's quiet a lot of legacy hardware like that.

It's completelly logical explanation... I have Dexxa scanner (Dexxa is
bought by Logitech few years ago) and latest drivers were for win98, and
that was the reason I was having dual boot on my PC... I've used Artec
(or something like that) drivers, but I've got problems with those
too... Finally I've fixed all my problems with XP SP2. What I was trying
to say is that maybe he should try to search some alternative drivers
and if he succeded he doesn't have to install two OS-es at the same
time... I didn't mean to attack him :)

I've got an Iomega BUZ video capture card that only works under Win9X
OSes. Although I recently bought a DV cam with Firewire and can now
ditch it and use XP exclusively.

Are you saying that your old kit now works in SP2?

Might save me the cost of a new sheetfed scanner.

I have never seen any XP drivers for my Logitech kit.
