You cannot use certain reserved characters or the name History

?\*/][

It is limited to 31 characters and cannot be blank

I am aware that certain characters are illegal. However, somehow a
worksheet got renamed ".XLS]JEENTRY". The problem is - how do I
get rid of the illegal character?

The illegal character occurred when I renamed a worksheet, I didn't
intentionally add the illegal character. I want to know how to get rid of
the illegal character.

Just a thought ..

Try saving the new file first before you rename the sheet(s).

Did you try opening a command line interface under the directory / folder in
which the file exists and renaming the file using the "ren" command? Which
version of Windows are you using? We need you to tell us HOW (what methods
you used) you tried to rename the file. I'm assuming you can't open it with
Excel. If you could you could just Save As and name it something else.

I experienced recently the same phenomena as you did, in a new file which
was unsaved. Like you, I was unable to rename the sheet, not until I saved
the file. I don't know why it occurs, but that seemed to correct the
situation.
