A WinXP shutdown problem resolved (ADODB Windows Update issue)...

J

Jeff Chapman

Hello all - Here's a tip that may help people who use Windows Update,
who have been having recent shutdown time problems.
Recently, I've been noticing extremely long shutdown times
on my IBM Thinkpad laptop with Win XP Pro. It used to take just 15
seconds or so to shut down, but over the past week, it started
to take more than one minute... which is just forever, when you're
using your PC commuting on a packed train, and you've got to
get off the train at the last station.
At first, I thought it was a driver or hardware issue, since I did install
a Canon scanner and a USB 2.0 interface card recently.
.... Nothing fishy there.
Then I started messing around with the group policy services.
But THEN, I found the solution... I had allowed Windows Update
to install "Critical Update for ADODB.stream (KB870669)" recently.

So... after I uninstalled the patch in the Add/Remove Programs
menu, my shutdown times returned to the previous 15 seconds
or so! That was all I did... I uninstalled the patch. It worked.

IMHO, any software patch that extends your shutdown time from
15 seconds to over 90 seconds really gets the thumbs down in my book.
I know what they say about security, how it's a necessary patch...
but I'd rather have the quicker shutdown time, thanks.

Information on this patch is at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=870669.

Hope this helps...

That patch is a temporary first shot fix for a VERY dangerous
vulnerability, that allows scripts at web sites to get malware added on,
that if installed can for example log keystrokes when you go to a Bank
page. Hopefully there will be a better successor before long - I know
MS are working hard on one. But for the moment a possible difficulty in
shutdown is the lesser problem

I'd suspect the OP has some malware, which is not very happy after the patch
is applied.

What I have noticed with this patch is that it affected all 20 of my X
Pro Thinkpads.
I am waiting to see if my work-around (I hope it continues to work
eliminated the problem.

All I did was turn off the hibernate function, restarted the laptop an
now it appears to have begun shutting down normally once again.
re-enabled hibernate and the problem has not reappeared but I'm stil
waiting to see over the next few days.

I did not experience any shutdown issues ever on XP Pro before th
ADODB.stream patch so I definitely suspect this to be the cause of th
problem.
Although Jeff experienced delayed shutdown, my systems would neve
shutdown unless the power button was held until the system turned off
