A way to automatically delete unwatched messages whenever Windows Mail closes?

Is there a way to have Windows Mail automatically delete unwatched messages
in newsgroups, whenever it closes (or at any other interval)?

No. The only options for automatic deletion of newsgroup messages are:
a) delete X days after downloading
b) delete all read message bodies.
Automatic deletion (if invoked) is done in the background, and may take
a while.
